Visual Novels have long been a thing in Japan, but in the west, most people have never really heard of them. Personally, I like to draw a parallel with Point-and-click Adventure games. Visual Novels are just games in which you read (or listen to) characters’ lines and make decisions via text-options. Visual Novels are a sub-genre of the “ADV” or Adventure Game genre. It’s worth noting that the popularity of such games have been rising in the west. 999 and Virtue’s Last Reward are both “ADV”. Telltale’s hugely popular The Walking Dead and Christine Love’s Analogue: A Hate Story are, too. But now to the important stuff.
Icebound: A Visual Novel is indie developer Fastermind Games’ attempt to open the genre to a wider audience, and it’s not their first forray into the Visual Novel world, you can play that here. Icebound has a steampunk/dark fantasy setting which takes place during an ice age. The game will feature puzzles and full voice-acting. Interestingly, LittleKuriboh of Youtube fame will be playing the main character — Dougal. Personally, I’m really interested in seeing what they do with this setting.
I could probably go on and on about Visual Novels, Icebound and my opinions on it, but there’s a demo you can check out here, so why not check it out and see if you want to back the kickstarter?
There are plenty of different backing options, but the minimum you must pay to recieve a DRM-free copy of Icebound is 15USD. Be sure to check out the other levels of backing for some bonus goodies such as the soundtrack, limited-edition t-shirt and your name in the credits!
